Caraway

Carum carvi L.

Alcaravea
Part used

Fruit.

Indication

Internally, the ESCOP (European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy) accepts the use of preparations of caraway fruit for spasmodic type gastrointestinal disorders, gases and flatulence.

Properties

Its carminative action has been demonstrated because of its essential oil components, which produce localized stimulation of gastric mucosa, resulting in increased tone and rhythmic contractions in the stomach. This prevents gas containment and increased gastric secretion.
The fruit’s aqueous extract has antifungal activity against multiple microorganisms and certain toxins.
