Valerian is used to improve sleep quality without causing side effects. The results lead to a reduction in the time required to fall asleep. However, the effects are not immediate and 2-4 weeks of treatment is required to achieve significant improvement, without the risk of dependence, tolerance or adverse effects.
Valerian root preparations have sedative and sleep inducing effects. Regarding the flavonoids in valerian root, they have been shown to have sedative and sleep-inducing effects.
